Excellent product Mar 27, 2010
By P. Morris I previously purchased a pronged collar to aid in training my 1yr old pit bull. That felt cruel and painful, so I purchased the Gentle Leader Head Collar on a recommendation from an employee at a local pet store.
It came with a 15 minute training DVD which demonstrates, put it on, and fit the collar and some property training techniques. We spent about 15 minutes, putting it on, and getting the fit just right and letting her get used to it before we headed outside. As the video suggested, I had several treats which helped putting it on the first time. The collar fits exactly as advertised: it doesn't choke, and allows her mouth to open and breath without restriction.
Once we got outside, she knew exactly what to do! Because there was no tension on the leash, she was able to detect the slightest pressure to know that she was not doing what I wanted. She was very attentive, and I was able to reward her several times along the walk, when she stopped on command.
Positive, painless reinforcement is definitely the way to go. We've only had this collar for a couple walks, but so far it seems to be a winner.

Made a huge difference Aug 01, 2010
By Margaret D. Jenks I adopted a dog that had been chained 24/7 and so was used to pulling on his regular collar. I tried all of the recommended dog expert tips with no result. Out of desperation I decided to try this. The change was amazing. I have a very energetic dog, who needs walks. Those walks went from a constant battle to an enjoyable stroll. Whenever I put him back on a regular lead and collar he reverts back to his bad old ways. Please try this if you have a dog who pulls when you walk him. Be sure to watch the video, because getting the fit right is really important to success with this collar.

gentle leader May 27, 2010
By Lyn Factuar Wow! Thus product works. My puppy is very energetic and he pulls while we walk him until he can't breath but, with this gentle leader he does not pull, he walks right along side me. evenmy 3 year old can walk him.

Excellent product - performs as advertised Oct 22, 2010
By TMV I have an incredibly obnoxious border collie that we hated to walk due to his incessant pulling/choking. This collar has turned him into a completely different animal. It only took about 10 minutes on our first walk with the gentle leader before he was sticking to my side and quit his normal pulling behavior. A+

This Leader is Out in Front Mar 24, 2011
By Mary Esterhammer-Fic One of our dogs is really athletic and energetic. When our kids were small, he was too strong for them to walk. The Gentle Leader is so effective, they were actually able to take him outside and maintain control without engaging in a tug-of-war or having him overpower them and yank the leash from their hands.
It works on the same principle as a horse's bridle: you control the head and direct the dog to go where you want him to go. It doesn't hurt the dog, either by choking him or putting too much stress on his cervical spine.
This is NOT a muzzle--some people seem to think this will keep their dog from biting. If you have a mouthy dog, you need to put him through some training or consult a behavioralist. And it is also NOT one-size-fits-all. If it's too loose, it falls off, and if it's too tight, the dog resists wearing it. The video and written material that come with the Gentle Leader pack explains how to get a proper fit. If you're still having trouble--and a lot of dogs are wiggly and don't cooperate with fittings--drop in at your vet's office. One of the technicians will be more than happy to help you get the right degree of snugness.
Also, the material that comes with the Gentle Leader goes into detail about using it for other training purposes, aside from not having to be dragged down the sidewalk in pursuit of a squirrel your pooch saw. I guess it's like your brain or your cell phone--few people use it to its full potential. But hey, if it helps out with pulling, it might work in other areas too, so go for it.
Another reviewer mentioned that this is not very useful with brachycephalic (short-faced) breeds like pugs. For those dogs, a harness would be more appropriate.
